OVERVIEW
|
The inaugural meeting of the Good CME Practice Group took place during the
Second Annual European CME Forum meeting in London, 18-19 November 2009,
where the overarching guiding principles were discussed by leading education providers
involved in European CME programme development, with input from members from
the CME and pharma communities. Most recently, an update on progress was given at the Fourth Annual European CME Forum meeting in Amsterdam, November 2011.
European CME is developing under its own inertia, working to converging
standards and agreements: the CME bodies are working ever closer together, and
pharmaceutical industry supporters are now under regulatory pressure to align
themselves with CME in a positive way.
The aim of the Good CME Practice Group is to look specifically at how the
European education provider/agency community works in CME and to develop the
appropriate operating standards.
During 2010 and 2011 the gCMEp Group continued their discussions and agreed to pursue the definition of the standards of Good CME Practice along 4 Core Principles:
Appropriate education
CME providers should ensure that educational activities have clear learning objectives that are
derived from a coherent and objective process that has identified performance gaps and unmet
educational needs. The education must be designed to positively reinforce existing good
practice and effect a sustained change in daily clinical practice as appropriate.
Balance
Balance needs to be evident in content, faculty and review. Content has to be developed
independently of the sponsor and reflect the full clinical picture within the framework of the
learning objectives.
Transparency
All relevant information should be disclosed to the learner so that they understand fully how the
content has been developed and presented. This includes the terms of the financial support,
relevant disclosures of faculty and organisations involved in the development of the scientific
content and the presentation of the programme.
Effectiveness
Post-activity evaluation should measure satisfaction, knowledge uptake and intent to maintain
or change behaviour in line with learning objectives. Providers should measure the
effectiveness of the education against “Level 3 - Knowledge Gain” of the Moore scale, which
should be seen as a minimum standard.
The group has now completed its consultation process with national and European medical societies, as well as national and pan-European CME accreditation bodies and is completing its manuscript for submission shortly. This work and how the principles can be put into everyday practice will continue to be discussed.
